Spa Rally
15th to 17th March 2019
It was at a totally unusual Herock Spa Rally that we attended this weekend! The second round of the Belgian Rally Championship 2019 was indeed marked by totally crazy conditions, with this Sunday cloudy, rain, hail and even slush! Which didn't prevent Cédric Cherain and Adrian Fernémont, ranking leaders Saturday evening, to continue their duel at the finish, the two Skoda Fabia R5' sharing the scratches before launching into the ultimate lap with an identical tire mounts. Despite two scratches from Fernémont in the last three stages, Cédric Cherain, co-driven by Pierre Sibille, was able to manage his advantage, to win with 13"0 good and offer the victory to SXM Competition...

The Skoda Fabia R5's recorded a relentless tripled at Spa, Ghislain de Mévius retaining his 3rd place, even going for a scratch in the last pass of Fays Show, helped by a pneumatic tire more efficient than that of Cherain and Fernémont. As for Patrick Snijers, he fulfilled his mission by accumulating kilometers driving the Volkswagen Polo GTi R5 from BMA, failing at 31"4 of de Mevius, and also signing a scratch in the second pass of Spa.

It was Joachim Wagemans (Peugeot 208 T16 R5) who completed the final top 5, enjoying the withdrawal of many other favorites and outsiders, whether it's Kris Princen (Volkswagen Polo GTi R5, suspension), Cédric De Cecco (Skoda Fabia R5, gimbal), Pieter-Jan Michiel Cracco (Ford Fiesta R5, engine), or Armand Fumal (Citroën DS3 R5, clutch). In the unlucky section, let's also point Stephan Hermann (Fiat Punto S1600), once again impressive ease before encountering electrical problems on Saturday.

Sumptuous duel, it was discussed throughout the weekend in the RC4 category, that of the R2's. Between the Opel Adam R2 of Timo van der Marel, who will take part in all the rest of the BRC, and Grégoire Munster, it was played with seconds, despite the different tire mounts of their cars. While the young Dutchman thought he had won the race, Bernard Munster's son hit hard during the last two stages, styling van der Marel on the pole for 2"1!

If Johnny Delhez (Ford Escort Mk2) led the dance in Historic BRC on Saturday evening, he saw melting this Sunday the most recent and most powerful Ford Sierra Cosworth of Dirk Deveux, which was the first appearance in rally. Taking advantage of the AWD, The Dutch driver was outside the Liege to win, Delhez putting a point of honor to ensure the 2nd place against the other Ford Escort Mk2's of Jean-Michel Gerome and Arthur Kerkhove.
